An electrical inspection is a smart investment. There can be all sorts of problems that you are unaware of. These can turn into big problems if left unchecked so better to have a spring electrical inspection.
Having your electrician in to inspect the electrical system should happen at least once a year, not just during renovations. They will make sure everything is working, up to code, and safe.
Why You Should have an Electrical Inspection this Spring
Spring is a great time to have the inspection done. Booked your electricians before the summer comes.
Snow and Ice Thawing
We all know that water and electricity don’t mix. Once all that snow and ice has melted, there is a possibility of damage. Even new systems can get damaged and the freezing and thawing that happens through the winter can corrode wires.
Damaged wires can also damage the appliance they are supplying power to. This could be your computer, television, refrigerator, lamps, and even the socket itself.
Melting snow and ice can also seep into the ground, the basement, and through your roof. It can be hard to know if this has happened without having it all inspected.
Overloaded System
During the colder months, we tend to use more electricity. Electric blankets, heating pads, space heaters, and we have more lights on when it’s dark. This can all take a toll on the system.
Many of us put up a tree, plug in lights, put lights up on the house, and often overtax our outlets. With extra extension cords and more things drawing electricity, it can overload and lead to fires.
Install GFCI Outlets
If you don’t already have GFCI outlets, they are absolutely vital for any outlets that are going to be near water or exposed to moisture. This includes the bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, and any you need outdoors.
If you do already have them, they can be tested during your inspection. They keep you and your home safe if these outlets are exposed to moisture.
Outdoor Lighting Installation
If you don’t have any outdoor lights, spring is the best time to get them installed. They are perfect for showing you where you are walking in the dark, they can be decorative, colorful, activated by motion, and perfect around the patio.
If you already have lights up outside, get them all inspected. Being exposed to the elements through the winter can really do some damage to them, plus they have had to work in the cold, wind, and damp weather.
Inspection Before Improvements
Many people use the spring months to do small home repairs, have a renovation done, install a hot tub or spa, or adding a new deck. These are all great ideas but you need to have the inspection done first.
If your home isn’t able to handle more items drawing power it can cause the system to overheat, start fires or damage the appliances. You may need to upgrade the system or add a few new sockets to handle the extra load.
Check Cords
Some of our older appliances may seem to be working okay, but their cords can become bent, broken, or damaged. The ones we don’t always use can sit in storage for several months and the cords can become frayed, broken, or chewed by rodents.
