Modern doorbells are designed to last for years. However, just like any other electrical devices, they are eventually going to malfunction. This could result in your doorbell not working at all, making strange noises when it is pressed, or ringing continuously. In most cases, doorbell dilemmas are going to be an easy fix.
While this is true, it doesn’t mean you should attempt a do-it-yourself repair. It’s always best to hire a professional electrician to handle any type of electrical work that needs to be done in your home. Even though calling the pros is recommended, it can still be helpful to know some of the most common reasons your doorbell isn’t working, which are highlighted here.
Loosened or Disconnected Circuit Wiring
Your doorbell is made up of a button (that you push), a wall chime, and a transformer. There are several wires connecting these components to each other. From time to time these wires may become loose or even disconnected. Regardless of if the wire connecting the chime and transformer are disconnected or if the wires connecting your push button have come loose, it can result in your doorbell not working.
Speaker or Chime Malfunction
The sound your doorbell makes comes from a small speaker box or chime that is located inside of your home. In some cases, the wiring found in your chime can malfunction, resulting in your doorbell no longer making these sounds.
To figure out if it is your chime that is to blame, you need a multimeter. This is a tool designed to check the chime’s wiring to figure out if there is any current flowing to it. Keep in mind, if you don’t know what you are doing, this can present a hazard, so it is best to call the pros for help.
Transformer Voltage Issue
The doorbell transformer works to step down electrical power that is higher voltage to electrical power that is lower voltage. Your doorbell is only going to need about 10 to 20 volts to operate. As a result, a transformer is needed for it to function properly.
In some situations, though, the transformer may be faulty. This can result in your doorbell malfunctioning. To figure out if your doorbell is the cause of the problem, contact your electrician.
The electrician will be able to test the terminals inside the transformer using a voltmeter. If the reading doesn’t match the voltage seen on the transformer, then it will have to be replaced.
Tripped Circuit
One of the easiest ways to fix a malfunctioning doorbell is to reset the circuit. Your doorbell does not need a dedicated circuit, so it will share one with a number of other electrical devices in your home. If you have noticed that several other items in your home are no longer working, then try to reset the circuit to see if that is the issue.
Remember, troubleshooting an electrical issue on your own can be dangerous. The best thing you can do is contact the professionals for help.
